Online Resource Tool Shows Growth in Junk Email from Asian Technology Centers
Redwood City, Calif., September 17, 2002 - Postini, the leading provider of email system perimeter protection services, today announced the immediate availability of Postini Email Stat Track, an online reference for editors who need access to current data on the growth of junk email (spam), viruses, and Directory Harvest Attacks (DHAs) on the Internet. Postini Email Stat Track presents data on the volume of global spam, virus, and DHA activity for the previous 24-hour period. The Postini Email Stat Track also maps the geographic sources of these attacks.
Currently, Postini Email Stat Track data indicates that while virus attacks on U.S. based email systems continue to emanate primarily from domestic sources, spam and DHAs are now a global phenomenon. Much of the current growth in spam and DHA activity is coming from high tech centers in Korea, Japan, and India.
According to Postini, the rate of junk email (spam) activity has increased 20% since June, 2002, and over 66% since January, 2002. This spike has caused corporate and service provider email systems to experience unexpected overloads in bandwidth, server storage capacity, and loss of end-user productivity. Directory Harvest Attacks, a technique which spammers use to collect valid email addresses from corporate and service provider mail servers, now constitute almost 1/3 of the "delivery attempts" to Postini's customers. Postini's email perimeter protection services block these attacks and quarantine the associated spam and viruses that are sent to the company's customers.
Postini processes more than 1 billion messages per month for over 2.5 million end-users. This volume enables the company to analyze and publish trends and sources of email vulnerabilities and attacks based on originating IP addresses.
