Postini is the Most Accurate and Effective in Identifying Spam,
Avoiding False Positives When Compared to 16 Competing Companies

REDWOOD CITY, CA, September 16, 2003 – Postini™ (www.postini.com), the industry's leading provider of email security and management for the enterprise, today announced it was honored with Network World's Blue Ribbon for achieving the highest score in the magazine's "Spam in the Wild" anti-spam product review, authored by Joel Snyder and published on September 15, 2003. The product review measured and compared anti-spam software products, managed services, and appliances from 16 different companies on a live production network over a 30 day period to test how well they served their purpose by keeping junk email away from the enterprise and legitimate email flowing. Each product or service was measured initially in two ways. First, each product was measured on the accuracy of its spam filtering technology. The higher the capture rate, the more effective was the product or service. The second competitive benchmark was the false positive rate, the ability of the filter to ensure that legitimate messages are not falsely tagged as spam. The lower the false positive rate, the fewer messages are incorrectly characterized.

Postini swept the field in both categories – with a 94% accuracy score (meaning 94% of all spam was captured and quarantined) and a 0.4% false positive score. The average company in the survey achieved a spam capture rate of approximately 80%, and a false positive rate of over 2.3%.

Though it is normally expected that a high capture rate means a correspondingly high false positive rate, Postini's world-class Heuristics Engine was able to deliver the best of both worlds, and achieve the highest overall score on the product review – a 4.4 out of a possible 5.0. Postini was also received high marks for its ease of use, individual spam filtering user settings capability, white-listing, and robust reporting features.
