REDWOOD CITY, CA, March 1, 2004 – Postini, the industry's leading provider of email security and management for the enterprise, today announced it won the Network World 2003 Best of Tests award in the anti-spam product category. The product review compared anti-spam software products, managed services, and appliances from 16 different companies for over 30 days to determine which technology was the most efficient at stopping spam and keeping legitimate email flowing. "The CAN-SPAM Act appears to have had little immediate effect on the amount of unwanted email offers," said Andrew Lochart, Director of Product Marketing. "Current Internet technology allows spammers to hide their identity, such that spam can only be fought through a combination of technology and laws."

Each product or service tested filtered more than 10,000 emails and was measured for accuracy of spam filtering technology and rate of false positives. The higher the capture rate, the more effective the product or service and the lower the false positive rate (the ability of the filter to ensure that legitimate messages are not falsely tagged as spam), the fewer the messages incorrectly characterized and quarantined.

Postini Perimeter Manager was the best at accurately stopping spam and preventing false positives. Perimeter Manager scored the highest, stopping 94% of the spam messages sent its way while delivering the lowest false positive rate, tagging only 0.4% of legitimate messages it processed as spam. On average, other companies included in the test achieved a spam capture rate of approximately 80%, and a false positive rate of over 2.3%.

Though with other solutions a high capture rate can result in a correspondingly high false positive rate, Postini's world-class Heuristics Engine was able to deliver the best of both categories, and achieve the highest overall score on the product review – a 4.4 out of a possible 5.0. Postini also received high marks for its ease of use, individual spam filtering user settings capability, white-listing, and robust reporting features.
