DESPITE NEW
SPAM LAW, POSTINI REPORTS
JUNK E-MAIL STILL PILING UP
Postini's Email Stat Track Data Indicates Spam
and
Viruses Still A Threat During January 2004
REDWOOD CITY, CA, February 4, 2004 – Postini™ (www.postini.com),
the industry's leading provider of email security and management
for the enterprise, today announced that spam is still threatening
email despite the CAN-SPAM Act that went into effect January
1, 2004. Spam accounted for approximately 79% of all email processed
by Postini in January, down from 80% in December 2003. Mydoom,
by far the top virus in January, was also the biggest virus outbreak
Postini has processed, eclipsing even last year's Sobig.F. Postini
quarantined over 12 million copies of the Mydoom virus in its
first five days.
"The CAN-SPAM Act appears to have had little immediate
effect on the amount of unwanted email offers," said Andrew
Lochart, Director of Product Marketing. "Current Internet
technology allows spammers to hide their identity, such that
spam can only be fought through a combination of technology and
laws."
Postini processed over 4 billion messages during January and
stopped a total of 29,010,101 virus instances from entering corporate
networks, an increase of 560% (29,010,101 / 5,183,577) from December
2003. According to Postini, the top ten viruses of January were:

Postini also announced that it protected customers from over
10,042,550 Directory Harvest Attacks (DHAs) in January. A DHA
is an attempt by spammers to hijack and steal an enterprise's
entire corporate email directory and use it to send out junk
email. Postini registered over 2.1 billion (bases on an average
of 216 attempts per attack) invalid delivery attempts for the
month.
Postini's Email Stat Track is available to users at www.postini.com/stats and
provides the most up-to-date statistics on the latest viruses,
spam and DHA attacks.
