POSTINI PERSONAL ARCHIVE TO REDUCE COST AND COMPLEXITY OF MAIL SERVER STORAGE, LEVERAGE INVESTMENTS IN MESSAGE ARCHIVING

New Postini Archive Manager Service To Manage Mail Volumes While Meeting End User Needs

SAN CARLOS, CA, April 24, 2006 – Postini, the global leader in Integrated Message Management, today announced the immediate availability of Postini Personal Archive to reduce the cost and complexity of mail server storage while giving users continuous access to a permanent, instantly searchable archive of all email and instant messaging (IM) conversations. Postini Personal Archive builds on the Postini Archive Manager service and the company’s industry-leading managed security platform to make message archiving an operational cost savings for administrators and provide unlimited mailbox size for end users. This will also help administrators better manage servers since the explosive growth of and dependence on email and IM have led to message server overload.

Postini Archive Manager with Personal Archive is designed to significantly reduce the cost and complexity of mail server storage by sending a copy of all messages to Postini’s secure, redundant data centers. Users are able to search, retrieve, view and restore any message managed by Personal Archive at any time via any web browser.

“With the launch of Personal Archive, Postini is establishing a hierarchy of service-based archiving solutions that address the broad, real-world, secure messaging needs of our customers,” said Andrew Lochart, senior director of marketing at Postini. “This new solution makes Postini the first managed service company to integrate compliance archiving with operational archiving and IM archival support. Not only will Personal Archive significantly reduce the strain on mail servers, but it will also improve quality of service and make employees more productive.”

In December Postini delivered Postini Archive Manager which enabled organizations to streamline the long-term storage of electronic communications and provide secure, controlled access for search and retrieval of messages without the installation and configuration of complex software, and without the staggering ongoing costs of managing storage with multi-year retention periods. Postini Archive Manager addressed four fundamental requirements: to enable immediate and seamless archive capability without further burdening IT or corporate infrastructure; to remove the costs associated with the long-term storage of data; to allow responsiveness in the event of litigation or any other form of the legal discovery process; and to provide a framework for meeting regulatory compliance requirements.

Rapidly increasing volumes of email are challenging IT departments. The massive influx of messages not only poses security risks, but also creates a strain on system resources. Based on an industry poll and operational data captured while processing more than 1 billion email and IM messages per day, Postini has discovered that controlling the volume of messages is a top priority of IT administrators.

“As users have increasingly relied on their inbox to store and access business information and attachments, email has become the de facto records repository,” added Lochart. “The problem is that email was not designed for that purpose. Without archive management, you end up with mail servers whose performance is bogged down by the volume of information stored in the database. The current system of mailbox quotas and policies of deleting email older than a few months are not practical for today’s business needs. New legal and regulatory requirements make email deletion a poor policy.”

Key features of Postini’s Personal Archive include:

  • Enables operational archiving, or the ability to offload active message data from the message server, thereby reducing storage and operational costs of the mail server and improving quality of service
  • Gives end users access to all email for a pre-determined time period or indefinitely, supporting their productivity
  • Gives end users access to all IM conversations if Postini Perimeter Manager for IM is enabled
  • Allows end users to quickly search their personal archive and find messages by sender, recipient, or keywords
  • Allows end users to recover any archived message without involvement of the mail administrator, reducing calls to the help desk
  • Stores the archived messages on immutable storage, four separate copies, in two geographically separate data centers
