FROST & SULLIVAN STUDY SHOWS POSTINI'S EMAIL SECURITY MANAGED SERVICE IS THE MOST COST-EFFECTIVE APPROACH

Study Finds Postini has Better TCO than Either Appliance or Software Solutions

REDWOOD CITY, CA — January 20, 2005 — Postini, the industry's leading provider of email security and management for the enterprise, today announced a Frost & Sullivan study evaluating the total cost of ownership (TCO) of email security solutions showing that Postini's Perimeter Manager was more cost effective than both the appliance and software approaches.

Frost & Sullivan took an in-depth look at the costs associated with three categories of email security solutions: software, appliances, and managed services. They built total TCO models to compare the true costs of the solutions over their lifetime of use. Variables such as purchase price, platform installation, network integration, configuration, and monitoring were analyzed to calculate the TCO for email security solutions in both large and small network environments.

The first TCO evaluation compared the cost of the Postini email security service with the cost of integrating an email security appliance in an environment of 300 users. While the costs of each solution were similar, the Postini service was approximately 10 percent less expensive than a comparable appliance solution.

The second TCO evaluation compared the cost of integrating the Postini email security solution with the cost of an email security software solution in an enterprise environment of 10,000 users. This evaluation proved that the Postini solution was over 40 percent less expensive than a comparable software solution.

In addition, the report showed that advantages such as integrated virus filtering, email spooling, and external filtering of spam and viruses created even more unquantifiable value. These features offer increased protection and disaster recovery capabilities, and reduce the amount of bandwidth and network infrastructure equipment required for Postini customers.

According to Frost & Sullivan, "The results of our study prove that by leveraging Postini's services model, customers are not only able to save money on the total cost of ownership of an email security solution, but are able to increase security and scale their deployments more linearly than by purchasing software or appliance solutions that are installed at the customer location."

"The Frost & Sullivan white paper confirms what over six million Postini end users have already known; Postini is not only the most reliable and robust email security solution available today, it is also the most cost effective," said Scott Petry, Postini's founder and senior vice president of products and engineering. "Part of the beauty of a managed service is that customers don't have to install hardware or software, and Postini preemptively blocks threats outside the corporate firewall, allowing IT departments to focus on their core competencies."

The research findings are part of a complete white paper, "An Evaluation of the Total Cost of Ownership of Email Security Solutions", which is available for free at http://www.postini.com/whitepapers/?WPID=24
